Raised in an America only recently seizing upon the Monroe Doctrine and during the period of American Enlightenment, Elizabeth Dennistoun Wood Kane was able to enjoy opportunities not made available to previous generations of women. Greatly encouraged by her husband, General Thomas L. Kane, Elizabeth’s writings of her experiences in a rapidly expanding America, and not in the least, her embracing the nascent field of photography gives us a unique glimpse of mid-to-late 19th century America. Her glass negative photos showed in amazing sharpness that era and specifically her hometown Kane, Pennsylvania and its people during a period of a wilderness being transformed.
